A phrase I hear often is, “I’m great at building rapport…”
…often followed by, “So it’s frustrating that my sales aren’t where I want them to be!”
This happens a lot (it happened to me!). We work our way to that $100,000 revenue mark but feel like we don’t know exactly how we got there.
So yes, you may have gotten this far by being a ‘natural’ salesperson or a genuinely hard worker, but without a repeatable process to back it up, it’s easy to get stuck there.
This has been especially true for me as someone with those traits who also has chronic health conditions, autoimmune diseases, and is neurodivergent.
I call it the “Accidental 6-Figure Entrepreneur” phenomenon—a smart, driven woman who’s built a 6-figure business but doesn’t have a clear way to replicate her success.
In this article, you’ll learn why this happens, why it’s a challenge for so many entrepreneurs (especially those of us who are naturally gifted and caring), and how you can turn your seemingly “accidental” success into intentional, repeatable growth for the long term.
For so many of us, making that first $100,000 often comes down to being relatable, easy to talk to, and great at building connections. If you weren’t good at this to start, you likely became good at it because of your chronic health conditions. I sure did.
Learning how to advocate for myself, getting clear on how I communicate with others about how I feel, and being able to bypass administration to get the care I deserve all made me a wonderful saleswoman!
These are powerful qualities, but they’re also limiting if they’re the only reason you’re able to close sales.
Here’s why: Building rapport is a skill, not a strategy.
Without a clear path from rapport to conversion, you’re likely having fantastic conversations, but not necessarily ones that close consistent deals. That’s why you’re only closing 20-25% of sales on average instead of 75-80% of sales.
If you find yourself asking, “Why can’t I repeat this?” or “Why does growth feel so slow now?” it’s likely because your sales process isn’t repeatable (or you don’t have a documented sales process yet).
You’re relying on rapport alone, rather than a structured, step-by-step approach that’s designed to grow with you.
While rapport-building is the first step in 99% of sales conversations, it’s not enough on its own to create predictable, repeatable revenue when selling.
It’s like a symphony of skills. You’re playing the violin, and while strings may often carry a symphony, you still need woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards to round out the piece and make it feel complete.
Without these other elements, your music falls flat. It’s not interesting enough to hold the attention of those who aren’t obsessive about the strings on their own.
Lovers of strings on their own exist, but they’re the minority. The masses prefer to hear all sections of the orchestra play together.
When you’re focused only on rapport, here’s what happens:
To move from accidental to intentional, repeatable success, you need a clear sales process that aligns your natural skills with a structured path to sales conversions.
A repeatable sales process takes the highest collection of actions you take that work and puts them into a framework you can optimize.
It’s similar to how we take medications or have practices we do regularly to manage our symptoms and care for ourselves.
For instance, when I look at my sales process document it’s easy to see what I do for lead generation, active selling, and ongoing nurturing. Whenever I notice my sales start to dip, I can pinpoint exactly where I need to focus to get them back up.
This leads to quicker changes and faster results, such as:
Less anxiety creates less desperation and “pushiness” when selling, too.
I like to create repeatable sales processes from what already works.
I also appreciate the ease of a good framework that will give me a foundation to build on (it’s why I give my clients a sales process generator tool so they can create an ideal repeatable sales process in under 5 minutes).
If you don’t have (a) clarity on your current best process or (b) a sales process generator tool, here are some steps you can take to design your repeatable sales process and escape the curse of the “accidental” 6-figure entrepreneur:
From here, you’ll have a clearer idea of what works so you can more accurately predict your success moving forward.
